The day after Canada defeated Slovakia, Vancouver is just warming up. I thought Whistler was wild but Vancouverites are over the top! The hockey fanatics filled the streets Sat. after Canada's win over the Slovaks, and every shop window is decorated. The mannequins all have skates or sticks in their hands, and rain boots, ponchos and umbrellas all adorn the Team Canada logo. One sporting goods store had their hockey jersey's pinned up to look like the Canada flag. Canada nose-strips were even being given out!
The flagship Bay store in Vancouver has mannequins at every entrance (6 on each of 6 floors!) and the International Pavilion on the 5th floor that has Olympic clothing from all the countries had lineups circling the whole floor. Even the mannequins were painted with country flags. The Pacific Centre mall which houses the Bay, had banners hanging along every corridor celebrating Canadian identities. On the free zipline that runs along the streets downtown, a "Capt. Canada" guy zipped along singing "O Canada".
Spring has sprung in Vancouver as well. Somehow it just seem wrong to be playing soccer in Feb! There are some other strange sites in Vancouver as well; these mannequins are real! I'm sure there will be stranger things today, especially if Canada doesn't win gold!
