Led by SAA founder and retired staff Duncan McKenzie, the 20-member SAA Torch Relay Team completed their 1 km leg of the relay in -36C winds and cold in Sudbury on Sat. Jan. 2, 2010. The team also stopped in at Thessalon to share their experiences with friends and family who could not make the trip to Sudbury. The Olympic Torch the team carried was purchased by Acting-Princi
pal
Brian Beauchamp and will be mounted in the courtyard along with a plaque
and photo of the team to commemorate this moment in CASS history.
Brandon Trotter became a 3rd generation Olympic torchbearer with his turn carrying the flame, after father Brian and grandfather both carried the 1976 Torch for the Montreal Games between Echo Bay and Desbarats as part of teacher Barry Hansen's Echo Bay elementary school Cross Country team. Other intergeneration torchbearers were Lindsay Gilbertson whose grandfather carried the Torch behind his snow machine from Bruce Mines to Heyden, and Karli Lee whose uncles were also part of the Echo Bay torch team.
The unofficial Olympic record for torch relays was set by Mrs. Hunt-Ford for the most family members running with the Torch during a relay and during one leg of a Torch Relay. She was accompanied by her daughter, Caray Ford, nephews Bryce Ford and Dereck Hurley, "kissing cousin" Karli Lee, and her son's godfather, Duncan McKenzie, setting the record at 6. A great big thank you to family and friends who came out to support the Torch team both in Sudbury and in Thessalon.
